School’s Out

This month’s GreenScreen will feature a showing of the film, “School’s Out: Lessons from a Forest School Kindergarten” (2013). This film, by Lisa Molomot & Rona Richter, follows a group of Kindergarten students in Switzerland who attend their class outdoors, instead of inside the confines of a classroom.

“No classroom for these kindergarteners. In Switzerland’s Langnau am Albis, a suburb of Zurich, children 4 to 7 years of age, go to kindergarten in the woods every day, no matter what the weatherman says. The filmmakers follow the forest kindergarten through the seasons of one school year to make their documentary film ‘School’s Out: Lessons from a Forest Kindergarten’. This eye-opening film looks into the important question of what it is that children need at that age. There is laughter, beauty and amazement in the process of finding out”- Rona Richter

This film is the winner of numerous awards and will allow you to rediscover the importance of childhood imagination and outdoor play.

Guest Speaker

Our speaker this month is Karen Eilersen, founder of Barrie’s Discovery Child Care Centre. Karen is a Registered Early Childhood Educator and a Certified Forest School Practitioner. Discovery Child Care is an Eco-Healthy certified, licensed child care center located in Barrie, Ontario.  Discovery serves over 150 children and families per day! It is unique in that it brings nature into the classroom and takes the classroom into nature, offering an environmentally aware foundation of early learning for children, from infants to school-age. Discovery Child Care Centre is the proud recipient of many environmental awards including Earth Day Canada’s National Hometown Hero Award for Small Business in 2013. The majority of the day is spent outside in a Nature Classroom. Here, children have the opportunity to interact daily with materials found in nature and in the process become thoughtful stewards of the earth we share.
