The Movie

Travel through the stunning, rugged wilderness of the Yukon and Northwest Territories down the Peel River Watershed. This Peel River Watershed is the only intact watershed left in Canada. This film highlights six Canadian artists who take a rough 20 day canoe trip down the Peel to gain insight and inspiration. They are looking to find themselves, and end up showing the world why protecting this and other watersheds is so important. The terrain, the wildlife, and the people of the Peel will take you on a unique Canadian film adventure that you will want to see on the big screen.

Guest Speaker

Our guest speaker this May is Claire Malcolmson from the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition. She will be speaking about the importance of Lake Simcoe and the watershed. Claire will address issues affecting the health of the watershed and the actions being taken to protect this important part of Ontario’s nature. Visit https://rescuelakesimcoe.org/ for more information about the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition.

Claire has been involved with Lake Simcoe all her life. Her experience of watching the lake
change, as a cottager, led her to create the Paddling Around Lake Simcoe program in 2002,
which both spurred citizen engagement in the lake’s health, and launched her career. She is
now the Executive Director of the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition.
Starting as a wilderness paddling guide and environmental educator, Ms. Malcolmson then
managed water programs at Environmental Defence. There, Claire played a leadership role in
the successful passage of two pieces of Ontario legislation: the Lake Simcoe Protection Act
(2008), and the Great Lakes Protection Act (2015). Claire and the Rescue Lake Simcoe
Coalition’s work on “Campaign Fairness” resulted in changes to the Municipal Elections Act

Claire Malcolmson

(2016), banning corporate and union contributions to election campaigns.
Volunteer roles include provincial appointments to the Lake Simcoe Stakeholder Advisory
Committee, the Lake Simcoe Coordinating Committee, and the Oak Ridges Moraine
Foundation Board. Claire is the past President of the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition, and
was President of the Board of the Heath Street Housing Co-op in Toronto.
In 2011 Claire completed a Masters in Planning and Integrated Watershed Management at
York University. Her BA in Anthropology and Environmental Studies is from the University of
Victoria.
Claire lives with her husband on a rural property in Innisfil, where she works as a consultant,
and raises their two young boys, chickens, and vegetables.
