The Guide to No-Trace Camping

  • Treat land with respect. You are guests in the forest.
  • Do not build a fire, if there is no designated area to do so, or if there are signs that specifically ask you not to.
  • Don’t wash pots, pans, plates, cups, utensils, toothbrushes or hands directly in water source. (Not even with soap that is biodegradable).
  • Don’t cut, scratch, scrape, peel bark from, or cut down living trees.
  • If you carry something in, you carry it out. No plastic, metal, cardboard, or unnatural human made products should be littered or left behind in the woods.
  • Pack gear away that isn’t being used. Keep your campsite clean and tidy. Otherwise, it is an invitation to wildlife.
  • Set-up a “bear bag” (Food that is put in a nylon/waterproof bag and hung high up in the trees). This won’t invite critters. Food lying around is again, an invitation to wildlife, and this isn’t good for the immune systems of animals to eat human food.
  • Don’t leave natural human waste unburied. All human waste must be left in an outhouse or at least 6 inches below ground, and a considerable amount away from any water source. Carry your toilet paper out with you if there is no outhouse. It takes years for paper to decompose.
  • Don’t dump stuff into the outhouse.
  • Take only photographs and memories, leave only footprints, kill only time.
