It’s a busy time for Living Green Barrie and our associated programs, so here is a one-stop-shop to make sure you don’t miss ways to empower yourself and get involved in your community.
Events
Community Garden Information Session
Where: Barrie City Hall
When: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, August 16th
The first and one of the most exciting upcoming events is our Community Gardens Information Session, hosted by Urban Pantry. Urban Pantry has plans to build community gardens at five new locations over the next three years to provide the opportunity for residents to grow their own food and provide fresh, local produce to those in need. If you’re looking for tips on how to get involved in the project, or interested in learning how to grow your own food, this is the event for you! You can find all of the event details here:
GreenScreen – Happening: A clean energy movement
Where: Uptown Theater, 55 Dunlop St.
When: 7:00 pm, August 23
The fourth Thursday of every month, we at Living Green Barrie host screenings of environmental films with the help of our sponsor Raymond James Executive Wealth Advisors. Not only are these great opportunities to learn about new environmental movements around the world, but they also attract a number of like-minded individuals and generate discussion on how to make Barrie a leader in green initiatives. This month we are featuring, Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution.
Whether you’re looking to make new friends with similar values, or just a cheap date night, this is a great way to get inspired to do some good. Oh, and it’s a zero-waste event so don’t forget your popcorn bowl! For more information on upcoming films, click here.
Native Tree Planting
Where: Barrie Disc Golf
When: 10:00 am-Noon, October 20th
‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now” – Chinese Proverb.
Have you ever planted a tree? The simple, but powerful act allows you to create a new living thing that you can watch grow and will remain long after your gone. It’s the easiest way to leave your personal stamp on Earth. Inspired by our ‘Call of the Forest’ GreenScreen in March, Living Green Barrie, Barrie Nature, the City of Barrie and the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority are partnering up to host a native tree planting in the fall. A big thanks to Barrie Disc Golf for providing the space!
Volunteer Opportunities
Where: Various Locations
When: September, Ongoing
Fruitshare is one of Living Greens most successful campaigns, though it is forever at the mercy of our seasons. Due to weather conditions, it has been a very slow season for fruit harvesting throughout the city. We would like to thank our current dedicated volunteers and homeowners for being involved, and please keep us updated via email or Facebook on the state of your fruit trees!
The good news is that we are about to continue our successful school program in September. We plan to plant 32 fruit trees at 16 different schools for the upcoming year. But there is always room for more! If you are a teacher, parent or student who would like to see one of these workshops at your schools, please visit the FruitShare website and sign up today. Few things are better than learning about growing your own food and sharing an abundance of free, fresh produce with the community!
Where: Delta Bingo Hall
When: Ongoing – Primarily Wednesday evenings 8pm-10pm
Barrie Delta Bingo is one of our most generous sponsors and allows us to fund many of our core programs. To pay them back we donate our time at the Bingo hall to help their clientele have an enjoyable experience. It only takes a donation of two hours of your time. Not only would you be some of Living Green’s most treasured volunteers, you would allow us to continue and create new initiatives to allow Barrie to be as green as possible. Training is required, so sign up to our mailing list or come to the next GreenScreen to learn more details!
