Why is that over 80% of Canadians are against GMO food, and want labelling while our elected representatives simple deny us? The government seems to be falling prey to huge lobbies large grocery chains, and Monsanto. Last night I was shocked to learn that many of the foods in our grocery store already have GMO in them. Worst offenders are processed foods, corn, soy and byproducts of the before mentioned.
Thankfully I came across a website that had some valueable information on how to avoid these GMO foods. There are food guides, pocket food guides (US based-but still helpful) put out by Greenpeace, and some helpful tips. For instance Fruits that are produced the conventional way will have a 4 digit code, with a 4 proceeding it while Non GMO fruit as a 4 digit code with an 9 proceeding it. GMO Fruit would have an 8 at the beginning. For example 4100 for Conventional (may contain GMO), or 94100 for Organic (Non-GMO). To avoid GMO’s you can purchase organic products which will be GMO free. The best alternative especially in Barrie is to use food coops and grown your own food as much as possible.
Support the local farmers that produce their foods without GMO’s in them. If we continue to purchase these GMO foods then more farmers will grow it and it will be almost impossible to stop. Currently on 1% of airable land of the world is used for GMO crops.
Many European countries have banned GMO’s and Canada and the US can do the same. I was very alarmed when I read into some studies done on guinea pigs and rats feed GMO corn, or soy. In both studies many these animals became sterile after a three generations, their offspring was smaller, and died five times more than in control groups that were fed non GMO corn and soy. I do not want to be a guinea pig but it seems as though I and my family are, actually all of us are. We are the first generation to eat this food.
